Annual & Perennial Plants for Northern New Jersey

28th February 2013

With spring right around the corner, even weekend gardeners are looking forward to seeing some color in their yards. To help make that happen, we’d like to highlight several flowering plants that are proven performers in New Jersey. These flowers are divided into two categories: annual and perennial. Annuals are those that live and bloom for one season, die in the fall, and must be replanted in the spring. Perennials are those that die back in the fall but regrow in the spring.

Following are the specific plants in each group that we generally recommend:

Impatiens—a shade-loving plant that requires moist, well-drained soil. They make good container plants as well; be careful not to over-water.

Begonia—consists of many varieties, some prized for their showy leaves as much as for their flowers. Gardeners may dig up the plants and bring them in for the winter, or bring in cuttings. Here are some suggestions for doing either successfully.

Cosmos—famous for being easy to grow and attractive to butterflies, cosmos are also great re-seeders year after year.

Zinnia—profuse bloomers that do best in full sun. They come in a wide variety of double and single blooms, all of which should be dead-headed (having spent blooms removed) to encourage continued flowering.

Here is a great informational guide to the selection and care of annuals suitable to our northern climate.

Astilbe—sports feathery plumes all summer long. It prefers shade, but can tolerate full sun with ample moisture.

Veronica—features long bluish spikes throughout the summer; it also requires dead-heading to continue to bloom.

Trillium—cultivated from a native woodland plant and named for the amazing symmetry of petals and leaves, some species are endangered and should be acquired from reputable nurseries.

Bee balm—late-summer bloomer, attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds and bees; its leaves can be steeped to make a beneficial herbal tea.

These are just a few of the many choices available to New Jersey homeowners. The professionals at Palughi Landscape Services would be happy to discuss your landscape options. We offer a variety of services so contact us for a free consultation today.
